The Range Rover sped along the A556 to the south of Northwich in the northwest of England. It was nine o’clock in the morning and McCready and Richards had spent the night at a bed and breakfast just north of Manchester. The weather was clear and McCready had finally accepted Richards’ assurance that Logan would be a necessary member of the team. He had the right skills, and his temperament was actually an asset. You needed someone bloody-minded for a job like this. McCready had taken some convincing, but time was short and he trusted Richards with his life.

They were now on their way to meet someone else Richards had said would be required if the whole scheme was to have any chance of succeeding. When asked about him, Richards had remained tight-lipped and just told him to wait and see. This hadn’t filled McCready with confidence, but right now he didn’t have much choice.

They were about five miles from their destination, which was an ordnance company called Magma Explosives. Richards had assured McCready that the guy they were coming to see could make things go bang in ways you never knew existed. McCready had been trained in the use of explosives underwater, but he wasn’t up to speed with the cutting edge of the science. Today would hopefully open his eyes.

He reached over to the central touch-screen on the dashboard, clicked the phone app and then speed dialed Paul Matthews. While he was waiting for it to be answered, he glanced at Richards. “Paul Matthews should be fine, after what Mercer did in dive control. And he’s a great technician. He could be useful.”

“That would make up the three, if you can get him.”

The speaker suddenly came alive. “Hi, this is Paul.”

“Paul, John McCready.”

“John, hi. I’m so sorry I missed the funeral, but Lucy had to go in for some more tests,” replied Matthews.

“How is she?”

Matthews’ voice dropped, and he suddenly sounded extremely tired. “It’s as we thought. The cancer’s spread, and the experimental procedure won’t be covered. We’re talking tens of thousands, maybe hundreds. We just don’t have that kind of cash. So that leaves us with conventional therapy. There’s still a chance, but you hear all these stories. It doesn’t look good.”

“I’m so sorry, Paul. I’m sure things will work out okay in the end.” He paused, as though choosing his words carefully. “Look, I’ve got something on—high risk, high reward. If it comes off, you could probably buy a hospital. Might solve all your problems. Oh, yeah, and it’ll screw Mercer for good. You interested?”

Matthews didn’t even take a second to reply. “Where do I sign?”

“Great, I’ll be in touch.” And he ended the call.

Richards glanced at McCready raising two fingers.

They left the main road and drove down country lanes for another two miles. Then Richards said, “It’s just up here on the left.” McCready saw the turn at the last minute as it was obscured by a high hedge. He had to brake harder than he would have liked and a lorry behind blared its horn and then was gone.
